Rosh Hashanah-Rugelach time for a sweet new year.

Rosh Hashanah is Rugelach time.  My daughter Ashley and I have have been baking them together for years.  I originally adapted a few different recipes many years ago, trying to replicate my Grandma Lena's recipe.  I do not remember eating them, however my father had described them for me and they sounded delicious.  I have yet to find a bakery or store bought rugelach that taste as good as these.  They are especially delicious fresh out of the oven, ok maybe let them cool for 5 minutes.  You will probably want to make a few batches as they go quickly and can be addicting.  They are a bit labor intensive but worth it.

 What does this have to do with scrapbooking you ask?  Well at the Somerset scrapbook expo I bought a page kit and I plan to use some of our baking pictures for the pages since they are about home baking.

Caren’s Rugelach

For the dough

2 C flour

2 sticks unsalted butter (or earth balance for pareve/vegan)

8 oz cream cheese (or 1 tub Tofutti cream cheese)

¼ tsp salt

2 TBS sugar

Cream butter and cream cheese until soft, smooth and well blended, the kitchen aid is great for this.  Add salt and sugar, mix again, add flour and mix until it starts to form a ball, Don’t over mix though.  Divide into 3 pieces, shape into a ball, flatten into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least an hour, overnight is fine.  Only take out the dough you are ready to work with.

For the filling (divided in 3)

¾ C brown sugar

¾ C chopped pecans

Approx. 3 tsp cinnamon (I don’t measure, I just sprinkle)

3 TBLS melted butter

Preheat oven to 350

Roll 1 piece of dough on floured board to about an 8” circle. Brush with melted butter.  Sprinkle ¼ C brown sugar, ¼ C chopped pecans, 1 tsp cinnamon on top.  Cut into 16 wedges, I use a pizza cutter. Cut in quarters, cut each quarter in quarters.

Roll up from the outer edge.  Place on parchment lined baking sheet with tip down.  They well spread so leave space.  I get all 16 on one cookie sheet.  Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden.  I use my convection oven for this.  Cool on rack and repeat

For chocolate filling, Use about  1/8 cup brown sugar and about ¼ C chocolate chips for each batch.

Grandfather and Grandson-a very special relationship.

Back in the summer CTMH had a special offer for a wall canvas WOTG.  I decided to try it and used pictures of my son and my father from many years ago.  My father and my son had a very special connection and unfortunately my dad passed away in February 2002 when my son was 7 1/2.  The larger picture is the last picture we have of dad taken at his 75th birthday celebration in November 2001.  My son has Asperger's and even though he had some issues my father never saw anything but his beloved only grandson.  He truly looked at the positive which always made me happy.  My father was one of the kindest men I have ever known.  He was a caretaker and took care of whoever in the family needed it.  My son Jordan really likes this wall hanging and said "I wish I had more time with him." The last time we saw dad smile was when he was in ICU on a respirator shortly before he passed, and we said "Dad Jordan is here, give him a smile" and he did. When my father passed away and I came home after just finding out (It was expected at that time) my "special-needs" son said to me "Mom if you miss grandpa just look at me because I look like him and he still lives right here in me" and he points to his heart.  I get teary to this day thinking about that moment.

 

The smaller picture was taken was Jordan was around 3.  We are so fortunate that my parents loved to spend time with my children and were always willing to babysit when I needed them.  They liked to do things with them and on this day my parents took him to see and ride a train, I think in Flemington, NJ.  

The kit came with the chipboard and a stamp set as well as the canvas and bling.  I stamped the letters and sentiments on the chipboard that it came with.  Unfortunately this kit is no longer available although if you really want one email me and I might be able to find one for you.

I really love this and have it hanging in my craft area.  Dad was also a painter so I am hoping to get some inspiration from him.  His birthday is coming up.  He would be turning 87 on November 1.  Love and miss you Dad

Special Needs mini-album

Ok will it has been forever since I posted, but I have finally finished grad school, got my MSN and added the initials PMHCNS-BC to my signature.  I hope I will have more time now to craft. I am working at a special needs camp for Autistic youth this summer (my 5th year).  I love these kids and can relate to the parents.  I thought it would be nice for the parents to have a little mini scrapbook with some camp pictures of their kids.  The new CTMH Artbooking Cricut cartridge arrived just in time.  I made 19 of them.  The counselors are amazing with these kids and they have done a fabulous job putting them together. 

I can't show the insides since they have pictures in them. I used retired paper packs as I donated all the materials.  As I look through these books, tears come to my eyes at the beautiful pictures and stories that are there.  For the parents receiving them I believe it is a priceless gift.

As the parent of a special needs child as well as a typical child their are many things we miss and many milestones that pass our children by.  To see the good times, smiles and activities that the kids were involved in is a special joy that we don't always experience.  Many of these children are not able to express to their parents what they do all day and we wonder about it.

The many hours that I spent cutting these out was worth it to me and I am sure that it will be a super special treat for these parents.  I know that I would have loved something like this made by someone that works with my son.

Finally did some new Studio J layouts.

I love studio J.  When I don't have much time to scrap I can do a pretty quickie layout and get something done.  Here is what I have been working on this week.

 My 50th Birthday and 10 years breast cancer survivor anniversary.

The title of this says it all.  I am so happy.  We are planning an August wedding.

I hope to get some more layouts done soon.

March 2011 SOTM Blog Hop

March goes in like a Lion and comes out like a Bunny!.  And this months SOTM is the cutest set of bunnies I've ever seen. It is called "Sensational Season" and it is a set of 10 stamps (D1454).  It is only available for the month of March. One of things I love about this set is that you can do other things, besides Easter (and since I do not celebrate Easter I am happy about that).  I chose to do it as a celebration type card.
 

 
It is hard to tell in this picture, but I used dimensional adhesive to pop up the bunny.  I used CTMH markers and I blended a darker color with the  lighter one while still wet and I was able to get the shadowing, similar to the way I use copic markers.  I used paper from "Wings" level 2 and "miracle" dimensional elements (they are so cool, they have a resist pattern on them so all you have to is ink them and voila!)  I added some Mocha "opaques", 1 for the bunny's eye and the 3 others on top.  I like how the bunny adds some whimsy to a more serious looking paper.  I used sunkiss yellow, taffy, key lime, juniper, baby pink, tulip, garden green and olive markers.  As soon as I finished colorin, I did a little shading and immediately blended with the base color.  I am very happy with the way the shading came out.  I also used the blender pen because I didn't have a gray marker so I picked up the ink form the cover of the ink pad to get the gray color of the bunny.

Feb. 2011 SOTM Blog Hop

December SOTM Blog Hop

It is December already?  Chanukah starts at sundown?  OMG where did the year go.  This months SOTM takes us to February ,D1445 "Amore"  It is perfect for Valentines Day as well as any romantic occasion. So sit back, relax and click away to see some fabulous artwork using this versatile stamp set.

This month I used a pattern called "Just Right" from "Wishes" an idea book for cardmakers.  I used a clear card Z1323 and Paper from "Olivia" level 2, colors include Smoothie, Pear, Sunset and Barn Red.  I used a bunch of our newer embellishments (which I just love) the pearlie things are called Opaques and they are from the Mocha collection Z1333, Sparkles from the red pink and purple assortment Z1326 and "Shimmer" designer brads Z1349.

Since this is a clear card, some of the paper is on the inside and you can see through part of the card.  This is the front, and the next picture is the inside.

November SOTM Blog hop

The stamp set is called" A Little Thanks" a set of 16 stamps that are great for thankyou cards as well as scrapbook pages.

In addition to this stamp set I used one of my new favorite sets D1438 "Circle of Love".  I used paper from Magnifique Level 2 X7127B and chocolate textrued cardstock.

Below is a close up of the center image, which I embossed with silver pearl embossing powder and I then used a sponge and "Pacifica" ink to rub over the image so the image "pops".  I also stamped on Twill ribbon and popped up the Give thanks flower with dimensional adhesive and used the smallest Pearl "Opaques" in the center.  I distressed the Chocolate paper with a sanding block and inked the edges of the paper.

August Stamp of the Month Blog Hop

I used the paper pack "Splendor X7124B colors used are moonstruck, goldrush, topiary and sunflower.  It is hard to see in the picture but I used dimensional adhesive to pop the flower. The card design is based on the card on the "Veranda" WOTG guide.  I stamped the small branch stamp on the ribbon and finished it with a colonial white edge anchor.

swaps i made for convention

Well, our CTMH convention was here and gone and as always was so much fun.  I love all the great ideas, the sneak peak at the new products, hanging with my CTMH sisters and of course swapping like crazy.  I thought I'd share with you the swaps I made.

I used "Boom di ada" paper pack, B1306 "Cottage Floral" stamp set, D1284 "with Love" stamp set, "Dimensional Elements Perennials" Z1139 , and I inked with sponges, stubble tool and stipple brush from Z1298 distressing tools.  I used the "wishes" idea book which has multiple card "workshop" ideas which made this quick and easy.

I used the same paper pack and the stamp set is one of my very favorites "Be Yourself" D1349 and "Glitz Stardust Glitter Glue Z1313 which was used on both projects.   i just love glitter and this is nice and neat, no glitter all over me and the table and the floor etc.....

This design is from "Expressions" idea book and uses "Good times" paper pack.  The stamp is retired from a travel set and I used it because it says "Washington DC" and that is where convention was.

I love swapping.  I got so many lovely cards that I swapped for.  I am planning an open house in September and will have all my swaps on display (as well as lots of new products and a sale table)  Details will be posted soon.

I am looking forward to scrapping today with my sister and will complete the projects I made at convention and add pictures to the pages we made.  I hope to post soon and give you at sneak peak at what is coming in September so stay tuned......

June SOTM blog hop

My card this month is based off of a design from "Wishes" (a CTMH idea book) called "Right Design"  I used Barn Red textured card stock, B&T (patterned paper) from "Passages" level 2 paper pack.  Ink is New England Ivy, bigger brad is Barn red (for the tie tack) and a metal "Foundry Bookplate" as well as buttercup sassy strands (retired).

Well, it is time to move on to my good friend Antoinette's blog.  She is so talented and I can't wait to see her at convention. I am sure you will enjoy the rest of the hop.

May SOTM Card

OK, so it is a week later, I made the card but it was my boyfriends birthday card so I couldn't post it til after I gave it to him on Sunday.  Then of course I forgot to take a picture of it.  He took a picture for me but  then I couldn't open it.  Well, it is finally here.  I hope you like it.  It is definately more of a challenge to come up with masculine cards.

I used "You Rock" Level 2 paper pack and the stamps that came with the "You Rock" workshop on the go kit as well as an outdoor denim brad which came with the kit and the card design is on the WOTG guide. 

I am vending at a crop tomorrow so time to finish this up so I can finish packing up.

This months SOTM is "Cherish The Moment" a set of 8 checklist style journaling type stamps.  I just love this set.  It is great for cards and scrapbook pages.

I am working on the album from my son's Bar Mitzvah and I thought this was perfect for the page I was doing.

I used paper from "Stardust" level 2 paper pack, versamark ink and gold embossing powder for the stamp.  I marked the check off boxes with clear sparkles-I used the smallest ones.  I really like this set.  Check back later as I am planning to make a birthday card that I will post tomorrow.

I used the papers from "Twitterpated" paper pack.  I actually used the workshop on the go (WOTG) guide card diagram with this stamp set.  I love the guides and I use them as idea starters as well as our other idea books.  the colors used are Crystal Blue, Sorbet, Sweet Leaf and Chocolate.  I used the Blending Pen with our ink in the lid of the ink pad to color in the images.  I also used "Basic Buttons","Chocolate ribbon", "Heartfelt Die cuts-wonder" for the leaf & 3d Foam tape to pop up the flowers as well as the piece that the flower pot is on.  Here is a close up.
